Product description: Ardhanarishvaraara, one of the most popular iconographic forms of Shiva that symbolizes the male and female principles are inseparable. A composite deity that shows the male-female figure of the Hindu God Shiva together with his consort Parvati. The fusion of Shiva and Parvathi portrays the indispensability image of purusha (masculine, pure consciousness) and prakriti (feminine, principle of matter). Ardhanarishvara is portrayed in a number of bodily postures.
The bronze statue portrays Ardhanarishvara standing in the abhanga or stanamudra a straight posture, on a lotus pedestal or padma-pitha. The statue depicts the three armed Ardhanarishvara showing the clear separation of Male and Female torso, with respect to Shiva on the right, and Parvathi on the left. There are two arms on the side of Shiva - one arm holds a parashu or axe, and the other arm usually shows an abhaya mudra or sometimes the front right palm is facing inwards and assumed to rest on Shiva’s Bull (the Nandi) as appears in the statue. Shiva’s jata (matted locks of hair) is seen flowing that represents his ascetic lifestyle, as Shiva is often portrayed as a yogi who renounces worldly comforts and engages in intense meditation. The yagnopaveetham (sacred thread), tiger-skin dhoti, serpents on his body are all iconic attributes of Shiva. The left side of the statue portrays Goddess Parvathi with one arm which usually holds a blue lotus (Nilotpala). Parvathi has a well-rounded bosom, a narrow waist, and a curvier body and hip with clothing draped representing the feminine part of the statue. The torso, hip and pelvis of the statue elaborately emphasizes the anatomical differences between the Male-Shiva, and Female-Parvathi. The overall expression on Shiva and Parvathi face reflects a perfect balance of ascetic detachment and compassionate grace, embodying the divine qualities revered in Hindu philosophy. The patina on the sculpture shows an antique warm bronze finish, that evoke a sense of timeless elegance. The concept of Ardhanareeswara is deeply rooted in Hindu philosophy and is often associated with the understanding that the divine is beyond gender and encompasses both the masculine and feminine aspects of creation.
