Product description: Maharishi Patanjali is revered as the father of yoga as per Hindu mythology. He is also called Gonikaputra, and is depicted as half man and half serpent. Patanjali’s depiction as half man and half serpent is just a symbolism showing that he was a serpent in his previous birth. The brass statue portrays Patanjali with his iconic attributes; human face and body, other half body with 3 complete serpent coils, 7 headed serpent canopy, rear hands holding a conch (Shangu) and a disc (Chakra), and his front hands in Anjali mudra. Patanjali is resting on a circular lotus pedestal supported by 3 legs. Certainly a beautiful statue of Patanjali with fine details.
A mythical tale of Patanjali: Once Lord Vishnu was resting on Adhi Sesha and watching Shiva’s cosmic dance. Vishnu’s serpent Adhi Sesha got highly impressed with the transformation happened to Lord Vishnu who was watching Lord Shiva’s dance. Lord Vishnu attained a state of Yoga, and Adhi Sesha questioned him about this transformation and expressed his interest to learn this yoga. Lord Vishnu told the serpent that he would soon be blessed by Shiva to learn this art. Adhi Sesha began to meditate towards Lord Shiva asking for a new birth to learn this yogic knowledge so that he could spread it throughout and teach people. During the same time a yogini named Gonika was praying to Shiva asking for a child, so she could pass on all her yogic knowledge to the child. At the end of her meditation she found a small human baby with a coiled snake tail in her hand, asking Gonika to accept him as her son. She happily accepted and named him Patanjali. With the blessings of Lord Shiva, Adhi Sesha came to the Earth as Patanjali to spread the knowledge of yoga which came to be known as the yoga sutras. Patanjali Yoga sutras are the original source that are still referenced and followed in modern yoga practices.
