Product description: The wood carving portrays the Hindu philosopher Ramanujacharya, Alvar Saint Nammalvar, and Theologian Manawala Mamunigal. The Philosophers and saint are connected through their shared devotion to God Vishnu, and contributions to the philosophical and devotional literature of Vaishnavism. The wood carving is a breathtaking piece of art, skillfully crafted with precision, and the face of each philosopher emanates an aura of divine beauty. Ramanuja is seated in padmasana pose with his hands in Anjali mudra, and holds a flag depicting the vaishanava symbols, with a sadari placed near him. Nammalvar is seated in the padmasana pose, with his right hand in the vitarka mudra, while his left hand holds a leaf manuscript containing his work. As an Alvar saint, he is adorned with a jeweled side hair bun, elegant jewelry, and a garland of flowers. Manawala Maamunigal is seated in padmasana pose with his hands in Anjali mudra, and holds a flag depicting the vaishanava symbols, with a sadari placed near him. As an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu, and a prime follower of Ramanuja, Maamunigal propagated Vishishtaadvaita philosophy to attain moksha at the lotus feet of Vishnu, hence it is believed that Maamunigal is a reincarnation of Adi Sesha himself, thus he is represented with a serpent hood. The naamam (Vishnu symbol) on their forehead, chest and arms symbolizes their devotion to lord Vishnu. The artist has used different heights and angles to create depth and perspective, making the scene visually compelling. The texture of the carving invites touch, as its smooth surfaces contrast beautifully with the intricate details across the panel.
Ramanujacharya, also known as Ramanuja was a prominent Indian philosopher, theologian, and a social reformer. Ramanuja's teachings had a profound impact on the Bhakti movement, particularly worshipping Supreme God Vishnu, and revered as one of the greatest acharyas in the Vaishnavism tradition. He propounded Vishishtadvaita Vedanta that offers a distinctive perspective within Hindu philosophy by harmonizing the oneness of Brahman with the reality and diversity of the world. Ramanujar’s life and teachings remain celebrated in South India, where numerous temples and institutions are dedicated to his memory.
Nammalvar, an Alvar saint, is revered as one of the most important among the twelve saints in the Sri Vaishnavite tradition. Nammalwar's hymns, which are collected in the Naalayira Divya Prabhandham are highly venerated scriptures, written in devotion to Hindu God Vishnu, and are considered to have profound philosophical and devotional significance.
Manawala Mamunigal also known as Sri Ramanuja Muni, was a Hindu theologian and philosopher, and a major proponent of the Vaishnavism tradition. He composed several devotional works, and commentaries on important Vaishnavite texts, including the works of his predecessors, like Nammalvar and Ramanujar. He emphasized the importance of the Divya Prabandham (Tamil devotional hymns) in daily worship, and reinforced the practices and philosophical teachings established by Ramanujar.
The overall composition of the wood carving serves as a testament to the skill of the artist who made the software model, and the artistry of the woodcarver who achieved the intricate details using his masterful carving technique, combine together to create a captivating and evocative representation of the Vaishnava philosophers and Saint. Wall hanging hardware is attached to the panel.
